|Rescue Me ID: 16-01-27-00589Jed (male)|
Maine Coon Mix Age: Adult
|Compatibility:|| Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults |
|Personality:|| Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant |
|Health:|| Neutered, Vaccinations Current | I adopted Jed from a shelter in 2012, at which time his fur - which is long and very fine - was heavily matted. The shelter had him trimmed (shaved) before I took him home, so it was some time before I learned that he does not tolerate normal grooming, so the mats returned as his fur grew. No matter what I try, I cannot brush the mats out; he fights anyone who tries to hold him down and shies away from any touch of the brush. The only way I've found to groom him is to take him to the vet so that he can be sedated: the full process costs $300 and needs to be done about every 8 months. Additionally, he becomes unable to keep his hindquarters ... (Read More)clean and will wipe himself on the carpet. Eventually I bathe him, which he hates but tolerates, but he doesn't stay clean for long unless he has been trimmed/shaved. He has never peed anywhere but in the litter box, although he recently started pooping on the floor (cement basement) near his box for no known reason. The final straw came last Summer when my adult daughter moved in with me; she has a fairly strong allergic reaction to him. On the plus side, he can be playful, will use a cardboard scratcher and leave your furniture alone, loves cardboard boxes and sunshine, is not a picky eater, and does not carry a grudge, even after all of the grooming battles, trips to the vet, and baths. He is quite independent and does alone in the house all day. He is not especially affectionate but likes a warm lap or a spot at the foot of the bed. He has been exposed to other cats and dogs and does not like them, but reacts by ignoring them and only gets upset if they try to approach him. I have had him for four years and just cannot keep up with him any more, especially now that my daughter is here. I realize that not everyone can adopt a cat like Jed, but if you can handle the maintenance and don't require that your cat be an attention hound, he could be a great companion.
